There was a point during “Byegone,” Volcano Choir’s best single (and one of the best songs — if not the best song — of the year), when I spotted people in the crowd almost giddy in anticipation of the “Set sail!” hook. Then, when it hit, like waves crashing on the shore, the energy throughout Paradise was palpable and infectious.

While I was a little let down by Repave on record, the songs glistened on stage, verging on a sound too big for the small club. Chris Rosenau, lead guitarist and foil to Justin Vernon, was right to praise their sound and lighting guys: this show sounded and looked superb.

One of my favorite gigs I’ve been to.
